The national picture, with dates and definitions
| Measure | Published figure | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Median annual wage, May 2025 | $55,440 | A wage benchmark for covered roofer employees, not a starting-pay offer |
| Projected employment change, 2025–2035 | 5% growth | A national ten-year projection, not a forecast for a particular city or contractor |
| Average annual openings projected, 2025–2035 | About 12,000 | Includes replacement needs; not 12,000 newly created jobs each year |
Why the national outlook is not your local job search
BLS’s Roofers profile, updated September 14, 2026, covers SOC 47-2181. It does not isolate residential shingles from commercial membranes, and it does not represent every estimating, sales or management role. Its wage and employment measures have different coverage; read the underlying notes before combining them. A projection is not a live vacancy count.
This board’s current listing volume is also not a census of the roofing industry. A quiet local search can reflect the board’s coverage, the employer’s recruiting channel or timing. Check official employer sites and apprenticeship sponsors as well.
Build a local evidence sheet
Choose one metro and one role. Over a defined period, record original postings with employer, title, date, location, systems, base pay and travel requirements. Deduplicate reposts and staffing copies. Mark ranges, commission and missing pay separately. Record when a posting disappears, but do not assume disappearance proves the position was filled.
Use the sheet to answer a narrow question such as “Which local employers currently advertise entry-level commercial crew roles?” Do not turn a handful of ads into a claim about the whole market. For relocation, compare the metro wage shortlist; for employer selection, use the research directory.
Start with the occupation
The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides a roofers occupational overview and wage data. Those categories do not automatically cover every roofing estimator, sales, or management role. Check the occupation, geography, and reference year before comparing figures.
Look at current demand carefully
Review several employers and distinguish fresh openings from repeated advertisements. A job-board count can include duplicate or older listings and does not measure every available job in a market. Look for patterns in required systems, experience, travel, and pay disclosure.
