The work & skills you’ll use

Roofing apprenticeships combine learning with practical work, but program structures vary. Check whether an advertised apprentice role belongs to a registered program or uses the title for informal training. Before accepting, understand the sponsor, expected learning, related instruction and how progress is recorded.

  • Learn roofing tasks progressively under experienced supervision.
  • Complete the instruction and practical learning required by the program.
  • Keep accurate records of hours or competencies when the program requires them.
  • Ask for feedback before advancing to unfamiliar materials or responsibilities.

Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.

Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks

These are all-experience occupation medians, not apprentice pay scales. A program’s written wage schedule is the better source for an apprentice offer.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.

Training & career development

BLS identifies apprenticeship as one route into roofing. The Roofers and Waterproofers union provides apprenticeship information, while NCCER describes a roofing curriculum aligned with apprenticeship training. Requirements, length and wage progression must be confirmed with the specific sponsor rather than inferred from a national average.

Interview preparation & career questions

Ask the employer: Can I review the program’s learning requirements, instruction schedule, wage progression and completion credential?

Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.

Is every job with “apprentice” in the title a registered apprenticeship?

No. Ask the employer to identify the sponsor and program status. Also confirm who pays for instruction, what attendance is required and how your progress is recognized. These details distinguish a structured training opportunity from a general helper vacancy.
