The work & skills you’ll use
Tile roofing jobs can involve clay or concrete systems on new roofs, replacements or repairs. Read past the word “tile” to confirm the work is roofing rather than interior tile setting. Ask which roof tile products and details dominate the employer’s workload.
- Identify the tile system and project layout requirements.
- Organize materials and assist with preparation under the crew lead.
- Complete assigned installation or repair tasks within your training.
- Communicate damaged materials, uncertain details and scope changes.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
NRCA offers a clay and concrete tile installer credential for experienced roof-system workers. Keep your application specific about materials, tasks and supervision. If your background is shingles or interior tile, explain the difference and ask what roof-specific training is available.
Research reference: NRCA: specialty certification. Training and certification requirements vary by employer and program; a resource listed here is not a universal hiring requirement.
Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: Which clay or concrete tile systems will I work with, and is the opening focused on installation or repair?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Does experience setting interior tile qualify me as a tile roofer?
Some work habits may transfer, but the assemblies, access and job responsibilities differ. Present your experience honestly and confirm the employer’s roof-system training expectations. Do not describe interior tile work as completed roof installation.
