Roofing Foreman vs Service Manager vs Project Manager Pay

WORKON ROOFS · Pay

Compare the responsibilities and compensation structure behind the title. Similar titles can cover very different scopes.

Three jobs with different accountability

Role Primary scope to confirm Compensation questions
Foreman Daily crew work, sequencing, materials, quality and field communication Hourly or salary? Overtime treatment? Crew/travel premium?
Service manager Dispatch, customer response, service-team workload and department results On-call expectations? Bonus tied to revenue, margin or collections?
Project manager Scope, schedule, cost, changes, subcontract coordination and closeout Number and size of projects? Travel? Bonus definition and payout timing?

Why a clean national pay ladder would be misleading

These titles do not map neatly to three roofing-only public datasets. A service manager may also estimate and sell; a project manager may run multiple projects or one small account. A foreman may remain hourly with substantial overtime. Do not rank offers by title or borrow the roofer occupation’s median for all three.

A current Tecta service estimator/project manager posting combines estimating, vendor quotes, labor analysis, schedule/cost monitoring and closeout. That mixed role illustrates why the responsibilities must be read before comparing salary.

Normalize your own offers

Illustration: an $80,000 salary spread over 50 working weeks and 50 hours per week equals $32 per hour of planned working time. This is a personal time comparison, not an overtime exemption determination or legal pay calculation. Compare it with the hourly role’s realistic annual gross and actual hours, then add benefits and travel separately.

For bonuses, ask for the formula, controllable measures, eligibility date, treatment of change orders, collections and canceled projects, and whether payment depends on remaining employed on a later date. Treat an unspecified “up to” bonus as uncertain.

In an interview, ask what decision authority comes with accountability: can you approve materials, staffing, schedule changes or customer commitments? Responsibility without the required authority is a job-design issue worth clarifying.

Foreman

A roofing foreman typically leads field execution: crew coordination, daily planning, quality checks, and communication about job conditions. Ask about crew size, travel, hands-on expectations, reporting duties, and overtime terms.

Service manager

A service manager may oversee dispatch, repair work, customer communication, technicians, and department performance. Clarify whether the position also includes selling work, estimating, hiring, or carrying an on-call responsibility.

Project manager

A project manager may coordinate budgets, schedules, materials, changes, documentation, and customer expectations across multiple projects. Ask how many projects the role carries and which decisions require approval.

Compare the package

Record base pay, bonus conditions, expected hours, benefits, vehicle arrangements, and travel. A higher salary can come with substantially broader responsibility. This guide does not assign market pay ranges; compare current offers in the same region and use the annual pay worksheet for transparent scenarios.

Avoid a misleading wage comparison

Do not use a roofer wage table as a direct salary estimate for every leadership role. Compare duties, supervisory scope, budget responsibility, and pay basis. Broad construction-management data can include many non-roofing employers; label that broader coverage if you use it. No verified roofing-only management salary survey is presented here.
