The work & skills you’ll use
Commercial roofing jobs can involve warehouses, retail buildings, schools and other business or institutional properties. Separate installation and replacement work from service calls: a production crew may stay on a large project, while a service team moves between properties. The building type alone does not tell you which membrane, metal system or attachment method you will use.
- Read the specified roof assembly and identify the work assigned to your crew.
- Prepare and organize materials, insulation and roof components for installation.
- Install or repair field roofing and details under the project specifications.
- Document completed work and communicate conditions that need a supervisor’s decision.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.
Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks
Commercial roofing is not a separate BLS wage category. The roofer occupation includes work across roof systems and building types.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
Build a record of the systems you have worked on and the tasks you can perform independently. NCCER’s roofing curriculum offers distinct low-slope and steep-slope pathways. Ask whether the employer provides system-specific instruction and manufacturer training before you move into unfamiliar work.
Research reference: NCCER: roofing training pathways. Training and certification requirements vary by employer and program; a resource listed here is not a universal hiring requirement.
Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: Is the opening primarily new construction, reroofing or service, and how much overnight travel is expected?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Can residential roofing experience transfer to commercial work?
Yes, experience with crew routines and roof work can be relevant, but explain what you have actually installed. Ask how the employer teaches unfamiliar membranes, details, documentation and larger-project coordination. A residential background does not automatically establish proficiency in every commercial system.
