The work & skills you’ll use
Roof coating jobs combine evaluation, preparation and application work. The role may be advertised as roof restoration, liquid-applied roofing or coating technician. Identify the actual system and substrate: applying a coating is not the same scope as every liquid-applied roof membrane project.
- Assist with evaluating and preparing the roof surface for the specified work.
- Carry out assigned repairs and preparation before application.
- Use the specified application method after appropriate instruction.
- Document conditions, product use and completed areas for the supervisor.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.
Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks
The roofer occupation is a contextual benchmark for roof-coating installation. It is not a coating-specific wage survey or a benchmark for every industrial coating trade.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
The Roof Coatings Manufacturers Association offers training on surface evaluation, coating technologies and application practices. NCCER also distinguishes coatings from liquid-applied membranes. Ask whether the employer trains workers on the particular products, equipment and documentation used on its projects.

Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: Who determines whether a roof is suitable for coating, and what preparation and quality checks are part of my role?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Is roof coating work just painting a roof?
No. The suitability of the substrate, repair scope, preparation and specified product system are central to the work. Look for an employer that explains these steps and provides training rather than describing the role only as operating a sprayer or roller.
