The work & skills you’ll use

Waterproofing jobs extend beyond roof coverings. Depending on the contractor, the work may involve foundations, plaza decks or other surfaces intended to resist water intrusion. Confirm the building area and product system before assuming that roofing experience is a complete match.

  • Review the assigned waterproofing area and specified system.
  • Assist with preparation and the sequence of work around other trades.
  • Apply trained installation or repair skills to the assigned components.
  • Record completed work and communicate details that need clarification.

Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.

Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks

Roofers provides context for roofing-related waterproofing only. Below-grade, deck and other waterproofing work may map differently; no standalone waterproofer median is supplied here.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.

Training & career development

Roofing and waterproofing apprenticeship resources describe routes into the combined trade. Local programs differ, so confirm the systems taught and the mix of classroom and site learning. Experienced applicants should separate roof membrane work from below-grade or deck waterproofing experience.

Interview preparation & career questions

Ask the employer: What share of the job is roofing, below-grade work or decks, and which systems require prior experience?

Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.

Are waterproofing and roofing the same specialty?

They overlap, but the work is not identical. A roof installer may have useful membrane experience while still needing training for a different assembly or work environment. Use the vacancy’s actual scope to judge fit and choose the relevant pay comparison.
