The work & skills you’ll use
Roofing superintendent jobs coordinate field leadership across crews or projects. NRCA distinguishes a superintendent’s responsibility for foremen from the foreman’s direct crew leadership. At a smaller contractor, however, one person may perform both functions, making the actual span of responsibility important.
- Coordinate foremen and field priorities across assigned work.
- Check that resources, instructions and schedules are understood.
- Review progress and help resolve quality or sequencing issues.
- Communicate field conditions and decisions to project or operations management.
Responsibilities differ by employer. Use this guide to compare the vacancy with your experience, then confirm the exact scope in the job description and interview.
Pay & outlook · BLS benchmarks
A superintendent may match first-line supervision or broader construction management depending on duties. The two national medians are separate comparisons, not a roofing salary range.

Wage estimates exclude self-employed earnings, overtime premium pay and employer benefit costs. Compare location, experience, expected hours and the written compensation package. See BLS wage definitions for coverage.
Training & career development
Build evidence that you can lead through other leaders. Useful examples include coordinating several crews, resolving a recurring work-quality problem or improving reporting between the field and office. Be specific about the scale of responsibility rather than relying on a title alone.
Research reference: NRCA: roofing career roles. Training and certification requirements vary by employer and program; a resource listed here is not a universal hiring requirement.
Interview preparation & career questions
Ask the employer: How many foremen, crews and sites report to this role, and which decisions can I make without additional approval?
Write down the reporting relationship, expected schedule and the skills you will be trusted to use independently. Ask how performance is reviewed and what learning or responsibility would support your next step. For field assignments, also confirm the employer’s task-specific training, equipment and site orientation.
Should superintendent pay be compared with foreman or construction-manager data?
Use the duties to choose the comparison. Direct trade supervision and full project-management responsibility are not identical. The benchmarks below show both contexts so you can compare a posting’s authority, workload and compensation without treating the title as a precise statistical category.
